Jobs Without A High School Diploma

Question:

Hello, I am a 19 year old and I dropped out of high school. I am now in desperate need of a job. I know that I made poor choices when I was younger and I messed up when I did not finish high school. However, I am not dumb and I can write and read with the best of them. I would like to get a temporary job so that I can afford to take some GED classes and then ultimately the test. Is it possible for you to provide me with some information on what types of jobs are available to someone like me? I tried looking into working at the mall and fast food restaurants, but they all seem to require a high school diploma. Thanks!

Answer:

You’re doing the right thing by trying to get your GED; remember it is never too late to get your GED or your high school diploma. However, many jobs now require you to have a high school diploma. Fortunately, you can still get a job even without one. For example, I’m sure if you go back to the mall and the fast food restaurant, you’re going to find 15 to 17 year olds working there part time and in most cases they haven’t graduated as yet. What I’m trying to say is — there is a chance for you to get a job without a high school diploma at one of those establishments. The best way to go about it is to ask for an application; fill out the application right there and when the question of a diploma comes up, let the manager know that you have not graduated as yet and you’re in the process of getting your GED or diploma.

In most cases, they’ll allow you to put down that you have graduated or they might inform you to put no on the application, but they’ll still give you a fair shot knowing that you’re working on it. If you do get the job, do not get complacent and forget about your goal of getting your GED. I’ve seen it happen many times to people that lose focus and get comfortable in a minimum wage paying job when they have the potential to do so much more with their lives.

In addition, you can also look into other jobs that do not require job applications such as baby sitter or dog walking. These jobs can make you more than enough money to take your GED classes and the test. Good luck.
